I decided to finally go see this movie, Batman V Superman. I was really excited, because the comic is pretty great, the new Superman was pretty dark, should have been a pretty good time. What I got was a lot of confusion. Don't get me wrong, the acting was pretty good. I was really impressed with Ben Affleck maintaining his character throughout the entire movie, even when the lines and scenes were ridiculous. I thought he did a great job, considering what he was given. Superman also seemed consistent. I guess Wonder Woman was, but she barely got any spoken lines. I honestly thought she was Catwoman at first, because her introduction had her being sly, stealing, dressed to disguise herself, and slipping away from the great detective (Batman). What really got to me though was just all the noise that was happening without cause or reason. The movie felt like it was supposed to have had a "serious" tone for the first chunk of it, but there wasn't really any reason given as to why it was serious. Compared to the Superman movie, it felt like a very superficial premise. It was "serious" just for the sake of being serious, and "dark" because it was supposed to be. The "dark" parts weren't actually dark though. A dark movie is one that makes you feel despair, feel hopeless. That's not what happened here. It was superficially dark, so while Batman was silently despairing over some slight that the view can't see, the environment didn't change, his actions didn't change, none of the emotions or bleakness that is a part of a "dark" ambiance was felt. Batman wasn't given any concrete reason as to why his life was falling apart, because really, it wasn't. His life wasn't any worse now, at this moment in time, than it had been for years prior. Sure, buildings fell over because a giant alien and space ship crashed through them, yes, his office building got destroyed and stuff, but so did a lot of people's. He was apparently ok with it, until he suddenly wasn't. Dark would have been showing the tragedies that happen around Superman, and the direct impact they have on Batman. None of that occurred. It was just "oh, we're going to play some dark sounding music, that should get our point across as Batman ponders and scowls and plots stealing stuff". To make a dark Batman work with the new dark Superman, they should've taken a page out of the Dark Knight trilogy, and actually read the page they took. That Batman got depressing, it got heart wrenching, it was upsetting, and it was DARK. Heck, Batman v Superman had some of the most well lit scenes out of any recent movie. Music does not create ambiance alone! Don't even get me started on the music. I have never felt so prompted by a music score in my life. It was like canned laughter telling me how I should feel about a scene. "Oh, this scene is supposed to be dark and depressing, queue dark sad music". "Oh, this is the last love scene between Superman and Lois, make it romantic music". "Hey, it's Lex Luthor, start playing his theme music!". Seriously? This has to be the worst musical score I've ever heard for a movie. I liked Wonder Woman though. She went all Spartan, and had some really amazing fight moves. Her yell was fantastic, and her shield/sword combo was everything I wanted it to be. I just wanted more of it. She was also somehow able to resist energy beams using the power of her thigh muscles (her shield really couldn't block all that energy for her whole body). Batman finally used some gadgets, and pulled himself out of the way three times before banging into a wall and losing his utility belt. No idea who that boss was, though, or why he even appeared. It felt like he was just there to be like, "Hey guys, did you hear about the Justice League movie coming up? It's totally coming up!" and give them an excuse to "band together" and defeat something evil. Plot points:
I really had hoped for a better movie than this. It just didn't make any sense. That being said, good job actors, you really tried, and it showed. But the direction and writing of the movie was just lacking in nearly every aspect. Seriously, the music direction was just dreadful. Ugh. I was really hoping for a more Batman VS Superman angle, where they both had a reason to get annoyed at the other guy. It would've been so much better if they both knew who the other was, and started encroaching on their personal lives, and having an actual concrete reason to hate each other that would only later be revealed to be a master plot by Lex Luthor, not the cackling ineptitude of Lex Luthor, riddler edition. Can't wait to see what they do to Martian Manhunter.
